Anne heading towards Ninaki

Kercher Glacier Classic

Participants:  Sean Colvin, Forest Dean, Anne Dellwo, Francis Horton, Elizabeth Smith, Laurel Vielle

Having been intimidated for years about the route up Ninaki, (a rather small but desirable to me outcropping south of Chief Mountain), I asked Forest Dean if he would lead the rock climb section of the route, an exposed 4th/5th class ledge and then a steep gully climb, among other challenges.  Thankfully he accepted and on climb day the group had the bonus of Francis and Sean joining, both experienced rock climbers as well.  So, with all that experience, we were, or at least I was, all but certain we would make the summit...But alas, even with all the gear and experience in the world, if the weather doesn't cooperate, it's often best to back off and wait for sunnier skies, and that's what we ended up having to do.  In the mean time, we had a spectacular hike up Lee Ridge and a fun little scramble up Papoose. The fickle weather did ruin our chance at Ninaki but the day itself, along with the climbers, was most excellent and enjoyable.  Laurel Vielle
