TRM Cabin Weekend- January 9-11, 2025

With some recent snow and slightly cooler temperatures, it looked to be a great weekend up at the cabin!  On Friday morning Tony LaBaron, Dexter Hale and I headed up to the cabin for 3 days of skiing.  Carlene Quilter also joined us, but just for the day on Friday.   Zach Robertson came up later in the day for the rest of the weekend.  From the parking spot at the gate, we had very low snow conditions all the way to the trailhead (end of the road) although we did skin up some of it.  Once on the trail the snow conditions were pretty good.  Thanks to those who cut out the recent downfall!  After dropping our packs at the cabin, Dexter and I skinned up most of the way to the peak and had a great powder run in maybe a foot to a foot and a half of new snow!!  We settled into cabin life, Zach showed up and then we had some whiskey to celebrate being up at the cabin.  On Saturday the four of us skied to the top of Little St Joe in nice but windy weather.  Great views!!  After debating where to ski, we decided on a long run down the north bowl.  The top part was very wind effected but a bit lower it was pretty nice powder.  We of course wanted to do another run, so we went back up and skied a run down the ascent ridge.  There was some concern about avalanches, so we opted not to ski the south bowl.  Another evening of cabin life (always fun) followed and then on Sunday morning we headed back up to the top.  Our plan was to dig a pit at the top of the south bowl which we (mostly Tony and Zach) did.  After accessing the conditions, we thought "maybe" but "maybe not".  It was still windy up there!  We decided on "maybe not" and skied another run down the ridge.  Back at the cabin, Dexter and I decided to ski out while Tony and Zach had opted to do another run.  The trip out was good although we had to walk from the end of the road all the way back to the vehicles.  Tony and Zach got there shortly after we did.  Another nice trip to the cabin!!         -Paul Jensen
