Welcome!

Welcome!

Welcome, fellow Rocky Mountaineer!

The Rocky Mountaineers was started as a local mountaineering club in 1960, here in Missoula, Montana. You are now a part of that legacy! We’re glad to have you no matter your ability level or physical prowess. In the words of pro ice climber Will Gadd, “The great thing about outdoor sports is that we get to be who we truly are and there’s room for everyone outside.

So, what now? Well, we have monthly presentations that we hope you will attend (scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month, September-May) at Freestone Climbing Center. Also, our trip leaders are constantly posting excursions on our club calendar (find it on our website and be sure to check it often.) Our trips and excursions vary in difficulty and focus. We lead casual hikes, focused techniques
practice (like avalanche beacon use or climbing anchor building), and even expeditionary mountain climbs (like Rainier and the Grand Teton).

We send out a Newsletter around the beginning of each month. Our Website, Facebook and Instagram pages are a useful resource for finding partners or getting reminders on upcoming club activities or presentations.

We also maintain a winter-use-only cabin in the Bitterroot Mountains that we hope you will enjoy. It was built by our members in 1974 and your membership money helps to maintain it. Its free for members to use!

The Rocky Mountaineers have annual events too! Come chop wood at our Cabin Work Day (October) or climb a mountain or go for some hikes at the Kercher Glacier Classic (in August). In January we play in the snow at Winterfest! We also have a Spring Fling and BBQ in May.

The Rocky Mountaineers approach outdoor adventure as a craft that we are all constantly honing our skills for. We hold what we call “Round Table Discussions” (that have a more educational theme) where we focus more on sharing ideas about particular disciplines in mountaineering/climbing. We are not professional athletes, nor are we guides. So, sharing tips, tricks, and experiences during these
discussions help us learn from each other. We also occasionally have Field Day events, where we go outdoors and practice a certain discipline like Glacier Travel or Companion Rescue.

The best part of our club is our members. Many of us have made life-long friends within the club. So, whatever your adventure goals are, we are glad you have joined us and are excited to get out in the mountains to find out who you truly are!
